Read between the lines
directions: an inference is something that isn't stated directly, but that you can figure
out from clues in a piece of writing. practice making inferences as you read the passage
below about one man's experience on september 11, 2001.
as the famous towers began to crumble, many people showed incredible bravery.
take arthur del bianco. his job was to repair parts of the buildings. he was working in the
north tower on that terrible morning. as he lay in bellevue hospital days later, he told his story to a
reporter.
del bianco was on an elevator when the lights went out. he heard screaming and knew something
was wrong. he people on high floors get downstairs and out of the building.
next, del blanco searched the basement for his co-workers and friends. he found them. but parts of
the building began falling and he was finally trapped.
a firefighter him. they left the building together, guiding others as they went.
"how far away from the building were you when it octually collapsed? " the reporter asked.
del bianco's voice shook, and he spoke louder and faster as he described the danger. "we had just
stepped across the street," he sold.
