The whip lashed over the dogs. As the dogs sat there lazily, Hal continued to  lash them when soon I couldn't watch.

"Hal! You can't!" I screamed as I caught the whip and grabbed it from him. "Those poor dogs! You must promise me that you won't be harsh with them or I won't move a step!" I begged Hal.

 They continued to deny the wrong of the situation as again and again the whip fell upon the dogs. Soon enough the sled broke free as the dogs struggled under more blows of the whip.

     The sled was carried away by the poor dogs. My heart sank when I saw that my clothes and belongings were dropped onto the floor as the dogs went out of control. The sled thrashed and grounded over Hal as the dogs dashed across the street. Kind-hearted citizens caught the dogs and gathered up all of my scattered belongings. We would need twice the dogs and half the load if we ever wanted to reach Dawson.

I said pleadingfully, crying “Oh, hal, you mustn’t.” I grabbed the whip that he had beat the dogs with and wrenched it from him. “The poor dears!” I said without a second thought.  “Now you must promise you won’t be harsh with them for the rest of the trip, or I won’t go a step.” After my brother, Hal said awful things about the poor pups, I felt sad and I’m sure he could see it  in my eyes.

   Two men approached us saying,  “They are as weak as water if you wanted to know.” I was surprised at what they were saying about our dogs. I then rushed to my brother’s defense because these men don't know what is best for our dogs. “Never mind that man, you are driving our dogs and you do what you think is best for them.” I watched Hal whip the dogs again with no result. I felt terrible for the dogs and fell to my knee in front of Buck. “Why don’t you pull hard?” I cried.
