Two figures stood alone in a room. the room was dimly lit, the only light being the orange tinted fluorescents overhead. a long table stood in between the two characters, dividing them on opposite sides of the room. there was a man in doctor attire. he had brown hair that stuck up on one side like he just woke up, brown eyes with large bags underneath, and he was holding two laminated images of two young children. his feet were propped onto the table like he owned the room.
the woman on the other hand seemed tense. her eyes never wavered from the man, she seemed to be scared of him. her hands were behind her back and her chest was puffed out ever-so-slightly. she wasn’t smiling and didn’t look to be in the same room as the man. she wore a dark purple jumpsuit with a gold badge shimmering on the breast pocket. she had short cropped hair that hung no lower than her chin. the top half of her hair was pulled out of her face and into a half pony-tail.
“sir, are you sure you want her on the job right now? she is very unstable and will run,” the woman spoke. her voice was quiet and timid. it was like she whispered, scared to raise her voice even a little.
“yes,” the man in the doctor’s robe answered, “all the better to have her out in the field. if she does run, we will correct her. she needs to learn what will happen if she tries to disobey me. bring her in. i must speak with her alone.”
“yes sir,” the woman left without arguing any further.
not long after the woman left, a little girl entered the room, “sir? you called for me? ”
she wasn’t very tall and very petite. her arms looked frail and looked like they could be snapped like twigs. her jet black hair was cut into a pixie style and stuck up in random places, like a more stylish bed-head. she wore a raven black hospital gown and a stern expression. for a fragile looking little girl, she was intimidating. her blue eyes threw multiple threats out at once.
“ah, michael. i’m so you’re here. i have a very important task for you,” the tall man turned to face the girl.
“how much do i get if i complete this? ” michael asked expressionless. she cut the doctor off before he could say anymore. the way she spoke was much different from the woman before. michael spoke in a demanding tone and wasn’t afraid to raise it beyond a whisper.
“two pills,” the man’s face curled into a vicious grin, “i need you to retrieve this boy and his little sister for me,” the doctor slid the two pictures he was holding across the table towards michael. one picture was of a boy at least thirteen years of age, dark brown hair, beautiful jade green eyes, and pale skin. the other picture was of a little girl, she looked identical to her brother. short brown hair, forest green eyes, and a pale complexion, but she was younger.
“two targets? ” michael growled, “no, if i complete this with both the targets alive, i deserve much more than just two pills. i demand four pills and then you will have yourself a deal.”
“tsk tsk, miss michael,” the doctor shook his head, “you know the rules. one target equals one pill. two obviously equals two pills. it’s simple math, little one,” the doctor laughed mockingly at her.
“four pills, no more no less,” michael’s threatening blue eyes glared at the doctor.
the doctor’s expression hardened. he was irritated by her stubbornness and wasn’t going to allow her to get away with it, “fine. you will get your four pills, but no water to swallow them.”
michael’s eyes widened in surprise but instantly returned to her usual glare. she knew if she said anything too offensive, she would definitely be taken to room 1. “you’re the devil.”
the doctor laughed amused with micheal’s insult, “do we have a deal? ”
michael stuck her hand out and the doctor shook it without hesitation.
“why these two? what is so special about them? ” michael stared down the doctor, demanding answers.
“well first of all, they are determined. more determined than any others i have observed. they will do well with my plans. also, they are more dangerous than the others. this girl…she is stronger than she appears and this boy is smarter too. after the two months we have spent observing them, we realized they are never separated and a brain and brawn combined is much more dangerous than you realize. and you, michael, are the most powerful fear we have. better to be safe than sorry,” the doctor explained.
“fine. but you are putting my life on the line and if i die, good luck without me,” michael gave the doctor one last long glare then stormed out of the room.
“i have no doubt that you will succeed,” the doctor spoke to himself, grinning.

this is just a prologue. lol it's really cringy

Time is not always change. time can also mean continuity, and it can mean keeping acknowledged truths in mind despite differences in circumstances.there is no better example of this in things fall apart than the retellings of the proverb about the bird named eneke, the language in both retellings is almost identical despite the length of time that has passed between their repetitions. in comparing the usages of the same proverb, achebe allows his readers to note the similarities and differences between the situations, and he them understand how this story can be applied to their own lives.
