To Kill a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee, is a fictional novel that depicts the Southern States of the USA. The novel takes place in Maycomb, an imaginary town in Alabama. This town is a very stereotypical town of its time; the plot and characters are heavily based off of Lee's own experiences in her hometown. The novel is told by Scout, a six year old girl who lives with her father and brother. Overall, the town is described as being overall united and ideal. Everyone in town works together and respects each other, which creates a feeling of community and unity that one would expect of this type of suburban town. However, the trial of Tom Robinson divides the town. Townsfolk begin to turn on each other as the trial comes to the knowledge of the town. Different people have different opinions about the trial. The main divide is between the black and the white townsfolk. The black towns people are on Tom's side while the whites are against him. The peaceful unity of the town is destroyed as this trial and the facts come to light. Through the novel, the community goes through unity and division.
