nicki dashed up the shore and into the forest, not stopping
to think. she could feel the footsteps behind her, the
nameless thugs whose loyalties could be bought and sold
like sacks of sugar. those men were fast; she hoped she
was faster. for the first time since her journey began, a
sliver of doubt entered nicki's mind. why did she start all
this in the first place? the doubt would follow her as the
men continued to chase her around the island. they were
