my friend had concluded that if he took his language and culture out of his poetry, he stood a better chance of receiving a fellowship. he took out his native language, the poetic patois of our reality, the rich mixture of spanish, english, pachuco and street talk which we know so well. in other words, he took the tortillas out of his poetry, which is to say he took the soul out of his poetry.

In the Excerpt 1, the author is stating that if he takes out the nativity of his the poetry would lose its soul. "The tortillas out of his poetry" is the evidence of removing Hispanic culture from his poetry.

In Excerpt 2, the author is stating that he likes to have his own heritage which he has. The detail of the American trees dangling their branches over his head is used to emphasize to eavesdrop someone who wishes for a heritage,but not realizing that America has a heritage.

Both the authors express this in a figurative way yet it is meaningful. By the usage of Non- English words like Oom-pah,tortillas as they states that they don’t belong here but wants to become one of them by nature. Figurative language consists of different words with literal meaning.
