It all started with a gift. my mother made me a gorgeous mirror for my bedroom by designing the border herself with pieces of
polished glass. she spent hours grouting the masterpiece and i was thrilled with it. when i returned to my tiny apartment that 26th,
had the dubious task of finding a spot for it in my cluttered room. magazines, movies, candles, and various knick-knacks cascaded
off haphazard shelves and gave my room the feeling of a large, claustrophobic trash heap. i hated living there. not enough space!
complained constantly. i dreamed about spacious, modern condominiums with soaring ceilings and endless, sparsely appointed
bookshelves. that day, i got creative and pushed a few things around. i stacked one shelf on top of the other, pushed my little
bureau next to it, and began reorganizing my books and treasures. and treasures they were! gifts from friends, rummage sale finds,
forgotten it was like the mall in my room! i carefully put my most highbrow books on the top shelf and arranged my candles,
photos, and wine glasses in front of the books. topping off the whole thing sat my trusty houseplant ralph, whose leaves tumbled
down to the floor in a pleasing green waterfall.
