begin your outline
now that you have an idea of what you will be writing, it’s time to begin an outline of your essay. an outline you organize your ideas into a logical flow.
prepare your outline by first rereading the selection with a focus on gathering your supporting details. each body paragraph should have a main idea, and details from the text that directly support this idea. you will need to make notes of specific examples and quotes to include in your essay. then, transfer these details into your outline. once you have decided how to organize your essay, you are ready to begin writing.

you must have a works-cited list. you need to make sure that you show people where you got your information to avoid accusations of plagiarism. the works-cited list documents every source that is actually in your paper. you will create a “works cited” page from your list; it is the last page of your paper. use the latest edition of the mla to document your sources.
you must cite where ideas came from, unless something is common knowledge. if the average person knows a piece of information, then it is common knowledge. the sky is blue – common knowledge. a denier is the unit of measurement of a fiber’s diameter – not common knowledge, so you would cite this. even if you put someone else’s idea into your own words, you still have to cite it. that is called paraphrasing. in-text citations may appear in a few different forms:
“the brain functions as a way to us survive” (smith 56).

you must have a thesis. the thesis is what focuses your paper, so make sure that everything you include is something that supports your thesis sentence.
write an essay that answers the research question you developed. you should have a minimum of three sources. follow each step of the writing process, and remember to revise your essay. you will need to follow the rules of grammar by centering your title, indenting paragraphs, and using correct punctuation and capitalization.
use the same basic structure as your paper to create your speech, but remember that a spoken presentation is very different from a written one. go through your research paper and rewrite the language so it sounds appropriate when spoken aloud. you should focus on main points, introduction, conclusion, and transitions while you create your speech. you will then select and place images into a multimedia presentation. include a couple of bullet points that highlight the most important pieces of information that go along with the image. usually, the briefer the text, like a key word or phrase, the better. the presentation supports and enhances what you say; it is not a copy of every word. your teacher will assign the specific presentation software you are to use.
you need to have a works-cited list at the end of the presentation. you need to incorporate the information on your sources from your paper onto a slide. the title of the slide should be “works cited.” remember that images and songs are also someone else’s ideas, so their sources need to be properly documented as well.
use your creativity and try to avoid using the clip art that pops up first, because everyone else will probably pick the same ideas, too. ask yourself: “how do my elements enhance the content? ” make sure your images actually go with what you want to say, and not just be super colorful for the sake of being colorful. you also need to consider tone in visuals. just as you select a neutral tone in writing a research paper, the media should have a similar tone.
imagine your paper is about how the brain allows you to see. consider if the images in the presentation below have a serious academic tone and deliver meaningful information.
