In this excerpt from his "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," Fredrick Douglass write about his own experience of life. He mentions that the cruelty of slavery has not pardoned any black family. Slaves had to face cruel separations when they were sold like animals or like property.  

They had no say in who would buy them or couldn’t even oppose for such action. Buyers could choose any slave, separating him from everything he loved and he had no choice but to be a slave. So slaves were first valued by the buyers and then separated (divided) from their loved ones.  This is the difference between these two words.
