Marriages which are arranged for the sole purpose of acquiring u. s. citizenship is against the law and punishable (by prison and money fines). as a result, thousands of mixed (nationality) marriages are investigated annually by the uscis (united states citizenship and immigration services) to determine whether or not the marriages are authentic or a fraud – however, there’s a strange loophole to this policy – there are also approximately 10,000 u. s. purchases of mail-order-brides (females) from asian countries annually and the uscis approves of these unions as totally legal and authentic. my question is how does this paradoxical loophole in u. s. legislation not perceived as threatening ‘enough’ at all to warrant a critical investigation of authenticity by the uscis? explain this cultural phenomenon from functionalist, symbolic interactionist and conflict theoretical perspective.
