1 “Caitlin, Marty!” called Mom. “Dad and I have a few errands we need to run. Do you think you could finish up the chores around the house while we’re gone? If they’re all done when we get back, I think we could go out for pizza.” 2 “Sure, Mom. We’ll get everything done before you get home,” Caitlin answered as she winked at Marty. As Mom and Dad pulled out of the driveway, Caitlin grumbled, “Just as I thought. We have a lot to do. I’m not ready to get started!” 3 “Well,” said Marty. “I’d like to finish reading this book first. Let’s start in an hour.” 4 “Alright,” agreed Caitlin. “I’d rather work on the model I’m building. Let’s start at two o’clock.” 5 When two o’clock came, the book wasn’t finished and the model had completely captured Caitlin’s attention. Neither Marty nor Caitlin realized how quickly the time had passed. Around three o’clock, Marty called, “We better get started. I’ll wash the dishes if you’ll unload the dishwasher. Then we can work on the rest of the chores.” 6 “I’ll be there in a minute,” snapped Caitlin without looking up from her model. 7 Marty went into the kitchen to wash the dishes. He waited and waited for Caitlin. He knew better than to call her again. She was older after all. A minute turned into forty-five minutes, and it was nearly four o’clock. 8 “I guess we better get started or we’ll never finish before Mom and Dad get back,” said Caitlin. 9 “What do you mean, get started? I already finished washing the dishes!” 10 Caitlin rolled her eyes at Marty and started unloading the dishwasher. 11 “I’ll get it,” yelled Caitlin as the phone rang. She answered it, and Rachel, their cousin, was on the line. Marty picked up the second phone, and the three cousins carried on a long, animated conversation. 12 Just as they hung up the phone, Marty heard a car pull into the driveway. Mom walked in with a smile on her face, but the smile disappeared as she saw the condition of the house. “I guess we’ll have sandwiches instead of pizza for supper tonight,” Mom sighed. 13 Marty and Caitlin ate quietly and cleaned up immediately afterwards. They decided they wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Caitlin’s interaction with Marty contributes to the plot by — A) showing how much younger Marty is compared to Caitlin B) indicating where Marty is reading when Caitlin is doing her model C) highlighting how Caitlin ignores Marty when they need to do the chores D) causing Caitlin to be devious to get out of doing the chores Eliminate 11)
