Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote "Letter from Birmingham Jail with a purpose. He wanted to correct
misconceptions about, and defend his belief in, nonviolent resistance to racism and oppression
He directed it to a very specific audience, the white clergymen who criticized his actions. He used
persuasive language and rhetorical devices to effectively influence his audience.
