You use the information you find, but not the actual words. A summary is a shortened version of important information in which you restate key points in your own words. Knowing how to summarize effectively is an essential communication skill. Your summary will be much shorter than the original piece of writing, it will mention only the most important information, it will restate or paraphrase the information in your own words and it will discuss the author's ideas.
