While Stewart's speech is overall positively persuasive in nature, he does resort at times
to less desirable tactics that can detract from the message. Specifically, Mr. Stewart uses flag
waving by appealing to the Americans' sense of patriotism. He states, "They attacked America,
and these men and women and their response to it is what brought our country back to remind
us of why this country is great, of why this country is worth fighting for." Additionally, in moments
of emotional turmoil, Stewart resorts to using false dichotomies to oversimplify the issue. When
addressing the financial issues the medical bills have created for the responders, Stewart
proclaims, "Setting aside that, no American in this country should face financial ruin because of
a health issue. Certainly 9/11 first responders shouldn't decide whether to live or to have a place
to live." Here, he creates the illusion that these mense women have only these two options.
This oversimplifies his argument and while it sounds convincing at face value, it is only
