My Friend Alfy

When I was a kid, we lived on right on the edge of a town. It was the place where civilization ended and the forest began. That forest was my haven. It was a beautiful place with flowers of every shape and color. Right in the center of the forest there was a lovely lake filled with bass and trout. Dad sometimes took us there for camping and barbeque. But my best memories of the place involve my childhood buddy Alfred. Everybody called him Alfy.
I often explored the woods with my friend Alfy. Alfy was from Botswana. His family moved to the United States when his father won a scholarship to study medicine in an American medical school. Although Alfy's Dad got job offers from many hospitals in the city, he preferred to live closer to nature. So when our town hospital needed a radiologist, Alfy's Dad found the job he was looking for.
Alfy and I hit it off immediately. Alfy knew a lot about birds and insects and he had a great interest in butterflies. We were bonded together by our love for the wilderness. We would go into forest often on Sundays to swim in the lake, chase butterflies, or explore the ruins of the old mill which stood there. I still remember that clear, bright July day when we caught two large trout. We were so happy that we immediately set off for home to show our prized catch. We were walking back home in triumph when we heard a commotion. A lanky, bearded man with a sack on his shoulder dashed past us like a bolt of lightning. He was followed a group of townspeople. I recognized Sheriff Henry and the barber Jeff among them. The group was shouting and ordering the fleeing man to stop and return the jewels. It didn't take us long to realize that the man was a thief running away with Mrs. Cunningham's priced jewelry. We exchanged a glance and bolted right through the crowd towards the thief. Alfy took a shortcut he knew about through the bushes and pushed a log into the thief's way. The thief tripped and fell. Before he could get up, Sheriff Henry pounced on him and subdued him. Mrs. Cunningham got her jewelry back and Alfy became the town hero.
