Reread paragraphs 2-5. What effect does the dramatic
irony in this scene between Alison and Mrs. Murray have
on the story?
1
2 Mrs. Murray greeted Alison at the door. "Alison, thank
you so much for coming on such short notice. My two
little darlings are in their room right now. They were
very excited when I told them you'd be coming over
tonight."
It creates humor, because Mrs.
Murray thinks the joke Alison makes
about the twins is really funny.
3. "Yes, I'm sure they were." Alison said, smiling knowingly.
Josh and Jesse's mother was perfectly nice, Alison
thought, but maybe a little clueless.
It creates humor, because Mrs.
Murray thinks Alison is
complimenting the twins when she
really isn't.
4 "Aren't the twins just terrific?" asked Mrs. Murray.
5 "They're definitely ... something else." Mrs. Murray
beamed at Alison's response and then quickly went over
the usual instructions before she rushed out the door.
Alison took a deep breath and looked around the house,
which was a little too quiet.
It creates suspense, because Alison
believes that Mrs. Murray will
eventually find out her true feelings.
It creates tension, because Alison
believes that Mrs. Murray is just
pretending to think the twins are
terrific.
