What do we learn about proctors character in the exposition.

We learn that Proctor is a farmer in his middle thirties. He hates the hypocrites.

Explanation:

The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, takes place in 1692, at the time of the Salem Witch Trials.

In these lines, we learn that John Proctor is a farmer in his middle thirties, who resents the hypocrites:

"He is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct."

Although he is against hypocrisy, John himself is sinful.  In the play, John is married to Elizabeth, but has an affair with Abigail.
