Read the following excerpts from two speeches given by Franklin D.
Roosevelt at the onset of America's entrance into World War II in 1941. The
first one was given to Congress and the second one was a radio address to
the nation:
1. As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have
directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But
always will our whole nation remember the character of
the onslaught against us. ... (The American people in
their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
2. And in the difficult hours of this day - through dark days
that may be yet to come - we will know that the vast
majority of the members of the human race are on our
side. Many of them are fighting with us. All of them are
praying for us. But, in representing our cause, we represent
