But I knew that it was not normal, not what my friends at school did, and that they would ridicule me if they knew. The summer before I started middle school I insisted on sleeping alone, but she objected at first.

the residents of krakatoa are all millionaires who live under a "gourmet government" of their own devising. we get to see all the incredible adventures that creative people with unlimited resources would create according to the author.
