"The Quest of the Silver Fleece" is a novel written by W.E.B. Du Bois. It centers on the life of Zora, a child who came from the Southern area. The author uses sound to establish the mood of the story.

For example, in the first chapter (Dreams), the author describes the scene as night time by describing how the boy was listening to the voice of crickets. It is commonly known for crickets to chirp during night time. So, this creates a peaceful mood in the mind of the readers.

Another example in the same Chapter (Dreams), the author describes the boy as to having heard a human music. This then changes the mood from serene to something which the boy finds thrilling. The boy then started to chase where the sound was coming from because he heard something so sweet. This makes the reader also excited to know who or what it was.

"The boy wheeled blindly and fled in terror stumbling through the swamp, hearing strange sounds and feeling stealthy creeping hands and arms and whispering voices."
