30 POINTS

It was late November eleventh

And a chilly evening throughout

A woman was carrying groceries

Bringing them into her house

The wind blew cold from the north

And chilled her husband sore.

He yelled at her from down the hall

"Get up and lock the door!"

"I'm clearly busy," she had to retort,

"While your hands are in your pockets!

If it were unlocked for a hundred years

I still wouldn't bother to lock it."

He also refused to take action,

And neither could stand any more,

So they agreed that the next one to speak

Would get up and lock the door.

Then two men walked down the street-

Strangers, just past midnight.

They heard nothing from in the house,

But they saw a light inside.

They stood on the porch and asked to come in,

"We're cold down to the core!"

When they heard no reply to their urgent cry,

They opened the unlocked door.

They sat down next to the woman

And helped themselves to some porridge.

The homeowners sat and failed to protest,

But not for lack of courage.

Then one stranger said to the other,

"Hey man, take my knife.

You shave off the old man's beard

And I'll kiss his pretty wife."

Then our good man rose up,

As angry as a bee,

"Kiss my wife before my eyes?

Don't you know I can see?"

The woman stood and smiled

And skipped across the floor,

"Husband, you're the first to speak,

Now get up and lock the door."
