Evan, Mary, and Kate were preparing for the debate competition, and they had run out of arguments for their topic. During practice and discussions, the girls noticed that Evan was getting too agitated and was speaking louder than required. Then, Evan began to add "in my opinion" and "I believe" before everything he said. Kate felt Evan's arguments were too personal, and he was not giving others a chance to express their views. Mary felt Evan's behavior could lead them to lose the competition. Later, when the three of them were taking a break, Evan continued to talk about his goals and plans. Mary and Kate were tired of Evan's nonstop talks, but they pretended to be interested in what he was saying. All of a sudden, they heard a loud noise from the other end of the auditorium. Mary and Kate were startled, but Evan continued on about his plans. That's when Kate decided that she had had enough of his chatter and that it was time for her to speak up. Kate was the first one to speak. "Can't this wait, Evan? I think we should go and find out where the noise came from." Mary agreed and decided to follow Kate to the back of the auditorium. "Phew! This distraction was much-needed. He won't ever stop talking! I'm worried about our debate competition," said Kate rolling her eyes and suggesting that they should find a replacement for Evan. However, Mary countered that despite his self-absorbed and talkative nature, Evan was a good friend, and they could not hurt him by asking him to withdraw from the team. Kate agreed with Mary's point and when the two reached the end of the auditorium, they realized that Evan was standing right behind them. He had heard their conversation, and he seemed upset. Before the girls could apologize, Evan quickly blurted out that he was sorry for getting carried away with his plans and goals. He promised that he would give the others in the team a fair chance to speak and that he wouldn't get too aggressive or loud. Mary and Kate were relieved that Evan realized his mistake, and they were secretly thankful for Evan following them and listening to their conversation. 4 Who would be an appropriate audience for the passage?
