Women during the era of the Middle Ages were expected to obey their father, brothers, and other male members of the family. Unruly girls were often beaten into submission, and disobedience was considered a crime against religion. Education for noblewomen was more practical than academic. At as early as seven years of age, young girls were sent to live with another noble family. Girls would be taught several skills and subjects. Of primary importance were etiquette and manners. Girls were also taught how to dance, ride, curtsey, and socialize with the greatest nobles of the land. Young ladies were expected to act as servants to the older ladies of the castle. They performed duties such as looking after clothes and preserving fruits. Household management was taught in preparation for marriage. Higher-ranking girls were taught French and the principles of the Medieval Code and attended jousting tournaments. The Hundred Years' War occurred from 1337 to 1453. The conflict started when English kings claimed the French throne. After a series of battles, the French finally ousted the English. The Hundred Years' War marked a change in traditional warfare: New weapons and tactics were utilized, and for the first time in European history, armies were comprised of paid troops rather than vassals. A woman, seventeen years of age, became a hero in France during the Hundred Years' War.

Write an essay explaining the apparent incongruence between these passages. Who was the seventeen year old girl? Why is this important, and what were the consequences?
