Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's 108-minute orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961, made Russia the first nation to both put a human in space, and into orbit. On his experience in space, Gagarin reported that he saw objects floating in the cabin and that he himself was unable to remain seated in his chair, but was hanging in the air. This effect is called weightlessness, which occurs due to the zero gravity conditions in space.
John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth and was put into orbit in February 1962. He orbited the earth three times before landing successfully. Other astronauts including Alan Shepard, Jr., Scott Carpenter, and Virgil Grissom followed John Glenn to become the first set of Americans to make space flights. Later in 1962, the American astronaut Walter M. Schirra Jr. , and Russian cosmonauts Andrian G. Nikolayev and Pavel R. Popovich were launched to orbit the earth. The first woman in space was a Russian, Valentina Tereshkova. She made forty-eight orbits of the earth before returning safely.
On May 25, 1961, the race to reach the moon was made public when President John F. Kennedy of the United States declared, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. "
On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 moon mission was launched. Four days later, on July 20, the great dream was realized when Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin were with Armstrong, and they became the succeeding humans to step on the moon.
