If you have read how to kill a mockingbird how would I answer this?

In Chapter 12, the kids go to church with Cal. This is definitely a good example for your theme chart because we meet Lula. She is something. So much of the book will focus on the racism that is indicative of the South during this time period, but here we see racism from a different perspective. However, everyone else is very welcoming to Jem and Scout. Why do you think that is? Also, we see a different side of Calpurnia in this chapter. One thing that I usually get to discuss in class is the concept of "code-switching". Most of us code-switch. Code-Switching is usually a change in dialect/language that a person uses to fit the audience they are speaking to. When I am frustrated, around my family, or reading passages that use a southern dialect, my accent changes almost without me realizing it. However, when I speak to parents, people I do not know, or to other professionals at school, my speech is much more enunciated and pronounced. This is me code-switching. You may speak to some of your family members or people that you want to make a positive impression differently than you speak to your friends. (At least, I hope you do.) You are code-switching. So, what did you think when all of the sudden you see Cal code-switch? Why did she do that with Lula? Was it on purpose? Should code-switching be seen as a negative thing? *
