The Crucible

Choose 2 of the 4 prompts to respond to. For each, write a constructed response paragraph that identifies a situation or character that connects to the theme. Please circle which two prompts you’ve chosen.

Your response for each prompt should be 8-10 sentences long, with at least 2-3 pieces of textual evidence as examples to support your thesis. Be sure to explain your examples for a complete analysis. An in-depth analysis will also extend beyond the text, identifying the theme’s significance throughout history or in our current society. Please consult the rubric at the bottom of the page.


1. One’s reputation develops from the beliefs or opinions that people hold about him/her. Many characters in The Crucible will do anything to defend their reputation while some must give them up in order to survive. Write a constructed response in which you identify how this theme is discussed through the characters and their personal situations.
2. Abuse of power happens when someone in a position of authority takes advantage of his or her power for personal benefits. Many characters in The Crucible find themselves in positions of power and often use that power to get what they want, no matter whom it hurts in the process. 3. Conformity is a social influence involving a change in believe or behavior in order to fit in with a group. The characters in The Crucible often change their behavior or beliefs in order to avoid punishment or avoid standing out from the crowd. 4. Intolerance is the refusal to tolerate or accept differing opinions, beliefs, or behaviors.
