The legend of the monster with a heart of ice who used to be human once is told in the book When the Chenoo Howls: Native American Tales of Terror by Joseph Bruchac, James Bruchac. This book contain tales of how many years ago, man turned into monsters and only kindness can restore them back to their human forms.

According to the legend, these Chenoo creatures were turned to monsters, who "howls like the storm wind and pursues its prey". But once they are shown kindness and their hearts of ice are melted, not literally, meaning their hearts are softened, then they can return to their former human self. This is evident in the story where the grandfather changed back into his former self after the children helped him in his need. He had been a Chenoo but the children's help in procuring more rocks and water changed the old man's heart, which led to him "cough up a huge piece of ice in the shape of a human heart", thus bringing about his full transformation into a human being again. The theme of the legend shows that even the strongest monsters can have a change of heart from kindness.
