Research Wrap-Up - Standard
ELA Standard 38a - Write and edit work so that it conforms to the guidelines in a style
manual (e. g. Modern Language Association's MLA Handbook, Turabian's A Manual for Writers)
appropriate for the discipline and writing type. [L. 9-10.3a]
A note to classes:
We have mastered almost all of the style features and guidelines for formal writing. All
throughout the year, you used the SIEL method, and the T of SIEL requires you to include
textual evidence with a proper citation. These proper citations are critical because they are the
basis for avoiding plagiarism. You all have done an EXCELLENT job citing your quotes and
primary information!
Most recently, we have been using the SIEL method to produce a formal research paper.
Thankfully, we made it SO CLOSE to the end. We just need to discuss MLA formatting
specifically. The Purdue Writing Lab says that "MLA is a style of documentation that may be
applied to many different types of writing... Once you are familiar with the method, you can use
it to document any type of source, for any type of paper, in any field" ("MLA Formatting and
Style Guide"). Look familiar?
So what's left?
