Although many things have changed since 11th century in which Macbeth is set, majority of the themes present in the play are also present in our society today.

"Macbeth" is Shakespeare's great tragedy, set in 11th-century Scotland. Despite this time setting, the themes present in this play remain popular even today. Macbeth's growing ambition to become a new ruler is shared by many contemporary politicians and influential people. Macbeth is a prototype of a person ready to do anything to achieve his goal. He does not care about those around him, which is why he even kills king Duncan and his friend, Banquo. Today, the circumstances have changed, and influential people normally do not murder others who stand on their way. However, many of them are ready to betray other people and treat them unkindly, for the sake of their own success.

And do you look for the books, movies, and plays you consume watch and read to respond to the history of your times? Why or why not?

Although I do not look for the books, movies and plays that respond to the history of our times on purpose, it is usually the case that many books that are part of the school curriculum do contain ideas present in our times as well.

A great part of the mandatory reading material at school responds to the history of our times in some way. Shakespeare's work is the most obvious example. Themes of revenge, betrayal, love, friendship, forgiveness, freedom and the lack of it, are familiar to us in real life. It has been more than four centuries since Shakespeare's death, but we still recognize aspects of our society in his plays.
