In to kill a Mockingbird, Atticus says to Jem "she's an old lady and she's ill. You must hold your head high and be a gentleman."He said that Dubose was the bravest person he ever knew because although she was in pain and dying, Mrs. Dubose was determined to break her habit. He is trying to show his children to be respectful to people, and help them through their problems.
