Simon is the symbol of a "religious leader" in the group of boys. He is kind and helpful to others and a caring leader for the younger children. He is a visionary who does not follow the crowd but seeks to understand knowledge for its own sake. Simon does not follow the rules set by the group; he is not a follower. Simon has a hidden spot somewhere on the island to meditate, Simon gathers the best foods and gives them to the smallest children instead of caring only for himself, Simon alone seeks "the beast" in order to understand his own fears and face them, and to help the others acknowledge and conquer their fears. It is this which causes his death.Without Simon's "rule-breaking", many of the  children will suffer as there is nobody now to help them survive. They are taken closer to the road of being uncivilized. The idea of a religious visionary is a universal theme in religions.
