What are the functions of communication?

The main functions of communication are inform, persuade, and motivate.

Communication is the way we transfer messages from one person or thing to another. It can be through verbal or nonverbal means. People communicate using signs or symbols such as a heart for love or two crossed lines to show negative. Letters are symbols of sounds that come together to form words.

Inform. Communication that is meant to inform, does just that, gives information. It merely presents facts about a topic. It can be as simple as "A bug is in my room." or more complex as in how nuclear physics works. At work this type of communication is used to simply pass on information about work related issues.

Persuade. Communication that is meant to persuade has the goal of convincing the audience to take some sort of action. It can be as simple as a command or more complex like a persuasive speech. In a work setting, this is used to convince clients to buy products using an emotional, social, or logical appeal.

Motivate. Communication that is meant to motivate is encouraging. It uses phrases and sentences that are meant to keep a certain behavior going. Often in the work place it is used to help employees stay on top of their work and continue in a positive way. It provides reassurance that the work is going well and helps to make people feel valued.
