Ponyboy’s response to the statement that they must be angels or professional heroes, was “No, we’re greasers.. You know like hoods, JD’s. Johnny is wanted for murder and Dallas has a record with the fuzz a mile long”

What makes a hero? How does this “act of heroism” affect them? Can you be a “hood” and a hero?
