Their argument was about how mankind and God have a relationship that man cannot simply be expected to understand. Taking the example of "red-hot stoves" all around, Lige argues that it is man's duty to learn and be vigilant about it. Whereas, Sam opines that men are naturally cautious about everything and there is no need to be extra vigilant. He thinks that it is nature, which Lige counterclaims by saying "if it was nature, nobody wouldn’t have tuh look out for babies touchin’ stoves, would they? ’Cause dey just naturally wouldn’t touch it. But dey sho will. So it’s caution". This shows Sam siding with humans being part of nature itself while Lige counterclaims this.
