How has the school shut down impacted your senior year? What have you learned through this experience?

It´s embarrassing to admit that the first time I heard about schools shutting down for a few weeks to help stem the coronavirus outbreak, I was actually happy to get some extra time for myself. Little did I know that this situation could take the rest of the school year away from us. It´s especially frustrating being a senior, as most of us have been dreaming about our senior year for so long.

The possibility of the usual end-of-high school events, such as prom, final sports seasons, spring events, and the graduation ceremony being canceled was surprisingly painful and caused me a lot of anxiety. Even knowing that is the right thing to do, those types of events are meant to build memories that should last our entire lives, and not experiencing them feels like a big loss.

I definitely learned to appreciate school as both an environment where we can learn with daily face-to-face support, something some of my classmates really need as they are not used to online education, and as a place to socialize and grow relationships that help us become better. And most of all, I learned to appreciate our teachers, who even in these difficult times, do their best to help us out.
