Paperwork began to expand along with business in the 1850s. Before the invention of the stapler in 1877, people had to find other ways to bind their papers together. Some would use a needle and thread to stitch their papers together. Others tied their papers with string, ribbon, or tape. In fact, the term "red tape," meaning a lot of paperwork, comes from the use of red tape for binding law papers. Some even used glue to keep their papers bound. All of these alternatives to the stapler required extra work, and now the stapler is an invaluable office tool.
