Generally the movie was faithful to the book, but some scenes had to be cut so it could be a movie and not a mini-series. These include:

- Calpurnia taking the children to her church  

- Walter Cunningham and his fight and reconciliation with Scout  

- Aunt Alexandra's character was left out completely, which included her trying to teach Scout to be a "lady"  

- Miss Maudie and Miss Rachel were combined into one character

- Mrs Dubose's character was cut right down, so that her example to the children of a type of quiet courage was no longer part of the story
