Rashad lied to Shirley because he wa ashamed of what happened to him, even though he was not wrong.

"All American Boys" is a book co-authored by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. The book speaks about the lasting impact that racism have on the lives of people. The book is focused on the lives of two young boys 'Rashad' and 'Quinn.' Rashad was a victim of racism while Quinn was the witness of this racist act.

Rashad, was an African American high school junior, who was brutally beaten up by police for the crime that he did not commit. He was falsely accused of shoplifting because he was black.

In chapter 8 of the book, when Rashad went to hospital and entered the hospital's gift shop, he lied to Shirley about his wounds. He did not lie because he was wrong but because he was ashamed of what happened to him. He lied because if he would have told the truth, he might have been misjudged once again.
