Read the following downlon:
USA:
In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is shunned by her
community because she has an affair and a child out of
wedlock. It shows that her community is hypocritical,
because they act all righteous and moral, but they have no
compassion for her
ERNESTO:
I don't think I agree. I think they're just acting according to
the morality of their religion, which says that you have to
conform, and she doesn't, so there's no place for her.
Those are the rules
NINA:
What's kind of funny is that because there is no place for
her, and she's cast out, she really starts thinking for
herself. She becomes a kind of philosopher.
VIVIAN:
Right. In a way, the fact that they ve shunned her because
she doesn't conform means she has less reason to be part
of their community. They're not exactly winning her over.
ERNESTO:
I agree. I think that religious morality has to involve
compassion, because how else can you get somebody on
your side?
LISA:
I really admire her, because my family had a similar
experience at our old church. If you disagreed, you weren't
welcome. I'm definitely pro-Hester.
