Autumn was at the Laundromat washing her clothes for the first time. She was nervous and excited all at once. With sweaty palms, she poured a cap full of liquid detergent into the washing machine, just like her mom had shown her. Then Autumn opened her laundry bag and dumped her dirty towels and whites on top of the detergent. She inserted four quarters, closed the machine lid, selected the "normal" cycle, and hit the "start" button. She smiled very widely when she heard the machine begin to wash her laundry. Is something this boring supposed to make me this happy? Autumn thought. I hope I'm doing this right. Her eyes glanced down to the floor near her shoe, and she saw what looked like a crumpled $1 bill. She picked it up, unfolded it, and saw that it was a $20 bill. Wow, this Laundromat is awesome! she thought, and she stuffed the money in her pocket. Autumn carefully folded her laundry bag and sat down at a nearby bench. She quietly observed all the other people who were doing their laundry, and she wondered if they came to the Laundromat on a regular basis. Everyone there seemed either busy or bored. Some people were folding clothes, and others were staring blankly into space. One woman was walking frantically up and down the washing-machine aisles hunched over. "Did you lose something?" a man asked the woman. "Yes, I lost my laundry money," the woman replied. "I came here straight from the ATM, but I don't remember what I did with my cash. I thought I brought it in with me." "Did you check your purse and your vehicle?" the man asked. "Yes, I looked all over the place," the woman said, still hunched over and walking down the aisle. "I don't know what to do now because I can't wash my clothes without it." Autumn overheard their conversation and remembered the $20 bill that she had found. She thought about how her mom had always tried to teach her the difference between right and wrong. She thought about how her mom had taught her how to take care of herself by doing things like her own laundry. She thought about how she was on her own now, and she wanted to make her mom proud of her. Autumn stood up and slowly walked toward the woman. "Ma'am, how much money did you lose?" "It was $20," the woman said with a dramatic shrug of her hefty shoulders. "I don't know where it went." Autumn fished out the $20 bill from her pocket and told the woman, "I found this on the floor. I think it belongs to you." The woman gasped, laughed, and gave Autumn a big hug. Autumn smiled and realized that this was the first time a stranger had ever hugged her. I'm glad I did the right thing, she thought.
