The challenge of social norms can be viewed differently from all perspectives, It is very common for fights to start from this.

A prime example of this is child marriages in the gypsy community, we see it as awful and one of the worst things in the world whereas their culture describes it as honoring the family name. Something we see as a social norm is maybe less harsh, such as when you go on a date the man pays for the meal. Really anything can be a social norm. The law is a social norm if you really think about it, it's a social norm in a small town to not go over 100 mile per hour down a backroad because it would be frowned upon. Simple things really, and complicated things. People follow social norms to fit in with the other people around them.

    I was thinking to myself, what is a common American social norm? Honestly it's hard to determine, people usually just make the unwritten rules and follow them. It's like school for example, you probably wouldn't sit with people who have established a close knit community, because you were not welcomed. Here is one that is hilarious, boys wear blue and girls wear pink, that is a social norm. Now with strong opinions comes descrimination, but it's normal to some people, like men should be working and women should be at home cleaning. This social norm has changed quite a bit because that’s not the way of life anymore, women are much stronger. And it’s now okay for men to show emotion and isn’t considered weak if he is upset. All of these things are okay.

    Social norms in a particular family and religion are taken slightly more serious, such as when entering a house, take off your shoes or “no elbows on the table”
