After Hurricane Katrina, the staff at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Mississippi want to do something to help their community. They are going to different schools to work with children who have experienced the hurricane. The children were making artwork expressing their thoughts and feelings about the disaster. The staff then scanned the artwork, printed it on fabric, and were sewing the blocks into eight different quilts. Another example of a quilt used as a healing exercise is the AIDS memorial quilt. The AIDS memorial quilt, a huge ongoing project, will serve as a memorial to people who die from AIDS. Individual panels were made by the loved ones of those who have died. Since it was created in 1995, the quilt is growing to include more than 46,000 panels. When they are received, the panels were assembled into twelve-foot by twelve-foot blocks and sewn together. At over a million square feet, this memorial quilt is the biggest piece of community folk art in the world.
