1 - Friar JohnReason:

Friar John is the character in the original play, who is used as a tool to send a letter from Friar Laurence to Romeo, but could not do it because a plague breaks up and he becomes quarantined.

His small role was unsuccessful and made him irrelevant to the plot. Hence, he was removed in the 1996 version.

2 - The EndingReason:

In the ending of the original play, Juliet fakes her death due to which Romeo kills himself next to her body. When she wakes up and sees his dead body, she stabs herself to avoid parting with him.

However in the 1996 version, Juliet wakes up before Romeo dies and they share a quick kiss, before she stabs herself. This was done just to add a dramatic Hollywood effect to the film, the kind of stuff which usually gives Hollywood Movies an edge.

3 - GunsReason:

In the time period in which the original play was listed, swords were more common as a lethal weapon. So, there were no guns in the original play.

In the 1996 version, swords were replace with guns as shoot-outs give Hollywood an edge and make the film fit the 1990s setting
