Being apart from God because of sin is like the Israelites' exile from their homeland because in both cases, the hope and protection found in God (in the case of sin) and in their homeland (in the case of the israelites) is lost, and and they are left to wander aimlessly.

Sin is like wandering away from the sanctuary in God, it leaves the sinner vulnerable and without a real direction and focus in life. Sin leaves one exposed to adversaries without a guaranteed protection or hope of good things to come.This is the same experience experienced by the Israelites as they were exiled from their homeland and made to be fugitives and slaves in other places.
