Chapter 6 is one of the shortest chapters in Dragonwings, both in length and in the time period that it covers. In this lesson, you will learn about the new places and people that Moon Shadow and his father meet in the sixth chapter.
An Important Day
Chapter 6 is different from other chapters of Dragonwings. It only covers one day in May 1905. However, it is an important day, as Moon Shadow and Windrider move to their new home in the demon's neighborhood and have their first personal encounter with a demoness, her home, and many new and unusual inventions.

A New Home
When Moon Shadow first arrives at their new home, he is very frightened. Their new street, Polk Street, is mostly home to poorer demons and has rows of tenement houses. Tenements were homes divided up into residences, like apartments, that often shared bathrooms and were generally in bad condition. Unlike the boxy tenements, however, Moon Shadow and his father arrive at a Victorian house that has been designed with eight sides!

Moon Shadow and Windrider will be renting the stable behind the house. They have a stove, their mats and blankets, and some boards for shelves. The first thing Father puts up is their Buddha and Monkey statues, alongside the cup of soil and some incense. Now, it is time to meet their landlady, Miss Whitlaw.

The Demoness
Moon Shadow gathers his courage as they walk to the door of the demoness's home. He is prepared for a monster, ten feet tall, with blue skin, dropping earlobes, and a giant belly. When he sees a small lady wearing a clean dress with an apron, he is shocked! Moon Shadow and Windrider give her a gift: a picture of the Stove King, a kind Chinese god of the kitchen.
