Read the text. Roald Amundsen knew he wanted to be an explorer, so he dropped out of medical schoo
at the age of twenty-one. Amundsen next got jobs on different dangerous trips to the
Arctic. On those trips, he learned a lot about survival. For example, he knew that certain
foods could cure scurvy, a sickness common to sailors. This led Amundsen's crews to sta
healthy during long journeys. Years later, Amundsen led the first crew to reach the Sout
Pole. Most agree that he succeeded in part due to his choice to use sled dogs instead of
horses.
