Read the excerpt from "New Land, New Life." "Nonsense," said Ruth sternly. "The nearest town is a week away by horseback. With all due respect, Mr. Thorpe, you’re in homesteading country now. We take care of our own. There isn’t a homesteader within one hundred miles of here who has survived these parts without jumping at the chance for help when it’s offered." Mr. Thorpe nodded uncomfortably. Ruth could see that he was a man who was used to having control over a situation. This was a possibility in the bigger cities, but out here on the prairie, there was no such thing. How does Ruth’s view differ from Mr. Thorpe’s view about where the Thorpe family will stay? Ruth thinks the Thorpe family should live in a nearby home, but Mr. Thorpe wants them to leave. Ruth thinks the Thorpe family should stay at her home, but Mr. Thorpe wants them to leave. Ruth thinks the Thorpe family should camp out near her home, but Mr. Thorpe wants them to live inside. Ruth thinks the Thorpe family should return to the city, but Mr. Thorpe thinks they should build a home nearby.
