To get out of slavery and to be free or have the chance to get away the African Americans would sing a song metaphorically to tell one another things, like a screech message/code. This is how they would tell one another when to leave and when it is clear to to go.

The people who were in “charge” of the Underground Railroad made safe houses for escaped slaves to go to once they’ve made it away from they’re previous stay. One of the “leaders” was Harriet Tubman.

They would find ways to cross the boarder to Canada to be free and away from Slavery.
