According to the story, Gilgamesh and Enkidu are reluctant to enter the forest to confront the beast, Humbaba. Eventually, Gilgamesh gathers up the courage to face the ferocious beast and goes in to fight and kill him which he does successfully. Gilgamesh is proud of his victory and in the illustration, he shows his strength by decapitating Humbaba and holding his head.

However, this action infuriates the gods and they take Enkidu's life which makes Gilgamesh begin to search for immortality.
