My summary of a book is from the book "Half-Broke Horses" by Jeanette Walls. This book is about the life of her Grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. Fiercely independent and resourceful, Lily's no-nonsense attitude allowed her to thrive even in the face of natural disaster, personal tragedy, and reductive attitudes toward women. Lily respected people who did not complain about their lot in life, and was extremely hardworking. Lily was also a flapper, a sharp-shooter and herself was respected. She raised two children, Rosemary and Jim Jr. She was married to Jim Sr. The “Half-Broke Horses” title represent people who can never be quite tamed by society. Half broken horses are those that are not entirely wild, but also not entirely submissive to riders yet. This is because she takes her wild Arizona desert living family and places them all in the big Arizona city and they are all miserable. There is a lot of crime and they did not have the same freedom they did in the countryside. But, of course, this is not the first time she was in a city. She also lived in Chicago and hated it. Her friend died after her hair was caught in a wringer and killed her. She also had a bigamist husband. That was her first husband. Lily Casey Smith died from Leukemia on November 1, 1967. RIP Ms. Smith.
